“Every flower blooms at a different pace."

Language and literacy are very important to me. At an early age, my parents instilled in me a love of reading. Before entering kindergarten, I was reading signs, billboards, posters – you name it! Growing up here in Beaufort County, we were always in the library or visiting the Book Mobile. I always looked forward to those visits. For me, checking out new books was better than a trip to the toy aisle in the local department store.
Reading should be fun, but for many children, it is anything but. Children who struggle with pre-literacy skills often have difficulty reading in kindergarten; sometimes described as late bloomers. Without early intervention, this same child may continue to struggle in first and second grade. They are unable to read classroom texts and cannot spell simple words. By the time they reach third grade, they are 3 years behind their peers. No child should have to bridge this gap!
What about writing? Research has found that when children read they become better writers. Reading provides children with prior knowledge that they can use to write stories. It helps them make connections to their own experiences and emotions. Reading makes for better writing and better communicating.
Here at Bloom, we use the gold standard for literacy learning, Orton Gillingham (OG). This systematic approach targets reading, spelling and writing. It teaches the rules for the way written language works using multi-sensory (seeing, hearing and feeling) pathways simultaneously. Lessons are designed to work with students at the level they present by pacing instruction and introducing new materials in order to meet individual strengths and needs.

Assessment
Parents and caregivers will receive a comprehensive written report with a full understanding of their child’s needs. The report will include background/history, clinical observations, a detailed discussion of scores/performance for each test, diagnostic summary and recommendations for home and school - along with possible accommodations recommended for use in an IEP/504 plan.
DYSLEXIA TESTING
The initial evaluation will be comprehensive and take between one to two hours. Testing will include assessments for reading, writing, listening and speaking. Short breaks may be given to prevent cognitive fatigue.
LANGUAGE TESTING
The initial evaluation will take 60 - 90 minutes. Testing will include assessments for alphabet knowledge, sentence/paragraph/story writing, writing fluency, mechanics (capitalization and punctuation), spelling, and handwriting.
Services
Treatment typically consists of two 45-60 minute therapy sessions per week. These sessions are 1:1 and performed in a quiet atmosphere.
A comprehensive home exercise program will also be given to facilitate carryover; the ability to take the skills learned in the treatment session and use them in other environments such as at home, school, or with peers. The child/family will be responsible for completing an individualized, daily 20-minute exercise.

Literacy Specialist
Bloom Language & Literacy Services, LLC is a private therapy practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. Having the privilege of being born and growing up in Beaufort, I have worked in many local settings, including schools, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health services and a private practice. While working in a pediatric center, I recognized an urgent need for language-literacy diagnosis and intervention in Beaufort County. Because of this, I received further training through the Academy of Orton Gillingham Educators and Practitioners. This training is intense, systematic and provides a high efficacy level with hands-on knowledge that is passed directly to patients and their families.
